El laberinto del fauno.

Today I watched Pan's Labyrinth for the first time and oh my it's amazing. The spanish film is set in fascist Spain in 1944 where we see Ofelia, a girl fascinated by fairytales, and her pregnant mother sent to live with her sadistic stepfather who's a captain in the Spanish Army. During her first night, she meets a fairy who takes her to an old faun in the center of the labyrinth. He tells her she's a princess, but must prove her royalty by surviving three gruesome tasks. If she fails, she will never prove herself to be the the true princess and will never see her real father, the king, again.

The subtitled film is very gorey at times with a lot of bloody scenes involving the captain and the people he's fighting. Not only that, one character aptly named 'Pale Man' might be the creepiest things I've ever seen. He's a cross between Golum and the weird monsters in 'The Descent' if anyone's seen it. But anyway, overall a fantastic film by Guillermo Del Toro and definitely worth a watch. Tissues ready though, it's an emotional rollercoaster.
